About this tool

Calculate the theoretical annular volume, flush lag time, and uphole velocity for rotary drilling operations. Enter borehole diameter, drill rod size, depth, and pump flow rate to determine how long flush takes to return to surface and whether the uphole velocity is sufficient for cuttings transport.

Comparing theoretical return volume against actual returns helps drillers identify loss of flush into permeable zones, cavities, or fractures — critical information for the supervising engineer’s daily drilling record.

Applicable to water flush rotary drilling (open hole and cored). For foam or air flush, different velocity criteria apply.

How to use this tool

1. Select borehole and rod diameters — common wireline sizes are preset (N, H).

2. Enter current borehole depth — depth to bit.

3. Enter pump flow rate — in litres per minute. Typical SI rotary rigs: 15–60 L/min.

Technical information

Annular volume = π/4 × (D²_bh - D²_rod) × depth

Lag time = annular volume / pump flow rate

Uphole velocity = flow rate / annular area

Minimum uphole velocity for adequate cuttings transport: 0.3–0.5 m/s (water flush). Below 0.3 m/s, cuttings may settle and pack around the rods.

Limitations

Assumes uniform borehole diameter. Washouts or overbreak will increase the actual annular volume and reduce uphole velocity.

Cuttings transport also depends on flush viscosity, cutting size, and inclination. The 0.3 m/s threshold is for clean water in vertical holes — inclined holes need higher velocities.

Does not account for fluid in the drill string (internal volume). Total system volume is annular volume plus rod/core barrel internal volume.
